Anthropocene as an object of Environmental History and Environmental Law: from geological era to integrative knowledge
Abstract
The concern with Environmental History and the Environmental Law arose after the changes resulting from the Industrial Revolution and the globalization of capitalism, which expanded the frontiers of commerce, the manufacture of products and the provision of services. The effects of human interventions on nature became a central theme for politics and Law, from the end of the 20th century onwards. In this article, the recognition of the Anthropocene by the sciences is addressed, from the perspective of Environmental History. The objective is to discuss the role of social sciences in recognizing the Anthropocene period and facing the challenges brought by this period. The text is written in the form of an essay, comparing and discussing Anthropocene, Environmental History, History of Environmental Law and the concept of risk. It concludes that there is a need for an integrative approach, beyond the strictly geological approach, for conceptualizing the Anthropocene and for formulating political strategies aimed at facing the challenges it brings.
