Abstract

Sedentarism is an important aspect to be considered in the elderly, as physical activity helps both in physical and cognitive aspects. Therefore, studies involving different activities are needed to investigate the effects on these aspects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the Pilates Method on cognition, flexibility, muscular endurance and balance in a group of elderly people. Five elderly people participated (Experimental Group -EG) who took Pilates classes and a Control Group (CG) of five elderly people who only performed the initial and final evaluations, and remained four months without performing physical activities. The groups did not differ statistically in the analyzed variables. Despite this, improvements in perception, language and memory can be observed in the elderly in the EG. In the other cognitive domains, the performance between the groups was similar. Regarding flexibility, balance and abdominal resistance, maintenance or better performance was observed in all the elderly in the EG, the same was not observed in the CG group. It is concluded that the Pilates Method brings benefits to the elderly in terms of flexibility, resistance and balance. However, regarding the cognitive domains, it seems to contribute to language, memory and perception skills.
