Covid-19 Pandemic and University Students Mental Health: A Psychosociological Analysis
Abstract
In this study, we aimed to investigate how university students’ representations of the new coronavirus and their mental health are related in times of pandemic. To this end, 276 participants were asked to complete a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Free Word Association Technique. The data were processed using IRaMuTeQ software and later analyzed using two types of analyses: similarity and prototypicality. Results indicated that participants portrayed the new coronavirus as a disease of pandemic proportions that caused fear which has caused fear and death in the population. Moreover, this social object was anchored in the prophylactic measures taken to prevent contagion and in the crisis that has manifested itself in the psychological, financial, and labor spheres. It is expected that the findings of this study will underpin the basis for intervention strategies by governmental and non-governmental agencies, as well as the media in the face of the impact of Covid-19 on the mental health of society and, particularly, that of university students.
