Anxiety Disorders and Suicide Risk Factors: A Systematic Review

Abstract


This construct presents and discusses personal, environmental and physiological risk factors (RF) for suicidal ideation, attempt or consummation in each of the seven anxiety disorders (ED) present in the Statistical Diagnostic Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). This is a systematic review of productions composed of empirical, cross-sectional or prevalence studies; prospective or retrospective cohort studies; randomized clinical trials. The search was conducted in the databases: Pubmed, Cochrane Library and American Psychological Association, where 1,487 studies were found. After selection by eligibility criteria, there were 24 studies containing a total of 2,402 cases of ED, which make up the database of this review. RF and the outcome of suicide ideation, attempt or consummation were found for panic disorders, agoraphobia, social anxiety, generalized anxiety and specific phobia. These data can broaden the theoretical understanding and technical production of the various approaches within the health sciences and thus contribute to the construction and improvement of clinical procedures and protocols aimed at the treatment of individuals with ED and suicide prevention.
