Abstract

The objective was to know the relationship between smartphone dependence, stress, and subjective well-being (BES), in addition to verifying whether dependence could explain these variables. To this end, there was a sample of 250 university students (M = 24.45 years; SD = 14.65), who answered the Smartphone Dependence Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Subjective Wellbeing Scale, and sociodemographic issues. The results showed significant relationships between smartphone dependence and BES dimensions. Specifically, a positive correlation with negative affects (r = 0.35; p < .01) and negative correlations with positive affects (r = -0.33; p < .01) and life satisfaction (r = - 0.33; p < .01). In relation to stress, dependence was positively related (r = 0.48; p < 0.01). It was also observed that this variable explained negatively the positive affects (β = -0.33; p < .001) and satisfaction with life (β = -0.33; p < .001), in addition to positively predicting the negative affects (β = 0.35; p < .001). About stress, it was found that dependence also predicted it (β = 0.48; p < .001). The discussion focuses on the psychosocial impacts of nomophobia.
