Masculinities, Work and Reproduction of Preconceptions: A Study With Gay, Lesbian and Bissexual Workers

Henrique Luiz Caproni Neto, Luiz Alex Silva Saraiva

Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze masculinity for non-heterosexuals workers and how it affects social and organizational dynamics, which was done through a qualitative study based on oral histories with gays, lesbians and bisexuals from Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. Data were treated by content analysis and the results suggest a hierarchy of masculinities whose highest level is associated with hegemonic, heterosexual and manly masculinity. Other non-hegemonic masculinities may even be socially tolerated, mainly according to their level of discretion. Those who expose non-hegemonic masculinities are subjected to violence legitimized by society because it thus maintains order, emptying the homosexual identity by blaming them for being different. This framework suggests seeing beyond formal processes to address non-objective aspects that affect people, their practices, and their performance in organizations.
