Planning and territory: the impact of the Olympic Games on the production of urban space in Rio de Janeiro

Felipe Buller Bertuzzi, Grace Tibério Cardoso

Abstract

Any urban interventions impact the landscape and the morphological structure of a city. In the case of Large Urban Projects (GPUs), this interference is even more evident. The purpose of this article is to verify the environmental perception of key people about the urban changes caused after the establishment of a GPU, the 2016 Olympic Games, three years after its implementation. It was found that, despite some occasional improvements in road infrastructure, transportation and in the increase in the real estate supply due to the construction of new buildings, the Olympic interventions resulted in the strengthening of the socio-spatial segregation of individuals. The relocation of residences in different parts of the city was promoted, as a result of the construction of the Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro.
