Abstract

The generation and management of Construction and Demolition Wastes (C&DW) have been a challenge for public administrations because its improper management causes losses in environmental, social, and economic areas. This way, this material has been studied and discussed by technical means and many researchers to develop a new tool for C&DW using and reduce its impacts. Among these, recycling can be highlighted. This paper has as main goal the technical assessment of basket gabions filled with construction and demolition solid wastes. So, basket gabions cells were filled with C&DW and basaltic Rocks, both crushed in coarse granulometry aiming to compare technical and engineering characteristics among them. The laboratory tests performed could evidence the characteristics of gabions filled with C&DW and basaltic rocks, presenting their displacements, characteristics, specific weights, standard deviations, compression and others, making it possible to draw a comparison between the objects of study. For conclusion, it can be drawn that basket gabions filled with C&DW may be a technical alternative for civil construction, reducing environmental impacts and raw material consumption form retaining wall execution.
