Abstract

The construction of the railway was responsible for the emergence of the municipality of Videira, located in the midwest of the state of Santa Catarina. Based on interviews, theoretical reference studies and photographic analyzes, this article aims to analyze the local railway architecture and draw a comparison of the use of these buildings between the present day and the time when the train was used as the main means of transportation, a period that is part of the identity of a country that stopped using this modal, which resulted in several idle spaces available for new uses. During the survey, it was found that the entire structure, formerly belonging to Companhia Ferroviária, had to adapt itself to new uses to move from a degraded and abandoned area to an area frequented by the population and of great real estate speculation due to its central position in the city. It is noted that many of the existing buildings in that period were demolished or decharacterized to attend to commercial uses, having no control and legislation in force at the time that pondered these actions. The study concludes that the architecture in question fits within an industrial and cultural patrimony, considering its old use and the importance of the railroad to the formation of the city, and that it would have been of great importance the greater attention of the public power in allowing the commercial use in these buildings, essential for the preservation of this heritage belonging to the history of the municipality.
