Urban Notions: a construction of the memory (and the city) of Itaboraí – RJ

Pâmella Victória Oliveira Souza, Jéssica de Almeida Polito

Abstract

When observing that human works inscribe and print in the unique characteristic territory, it is proposed to understand the city of Itaboraí as a fragment of the cultural landscape of Rio de Janeiro. The formation of this city, of colonial origin, occurred by the installation of a large square, better known as Largo da Matriz. Today, around this square called “Marechal Floriano Peixoto Square”, there is a rich architectural and patrimonial complex that consolidates the Historical Center. Like the work of the archaeologist, it is possible to uncover in this centrality layers and historical overlaps capable of rescuing the process of development of the city, urban memory and the symbolic values attributed by its inhabitants over time. In this way, the research seeks to understand the process that led to the formation of this current urban fabric, highlight the understandings of urbanity and affirm the heritage potential of the city as a historical site and cultural landscape.
