Conceptions About Gender Stereotypes of Men Accused of Violence Agains Women

Gender stereotypes are social constructs that profoundly impact society and people’s behavior. They are related to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), a prevalent phenomenon in Brazil. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the conceptions about gender stereotypes among men accused under the Maria da Penha Law 11.340/2006. A reflexive thematic analysis was conducted, aiming to identify themes with common meanings from the research data of 37 men prosecuted under the Maria da Penha Law, participants of the Online Psychoeducational Group with Men Perpetrators of Violence Against Women (GPHAV-Online). The analysis resulted in the themes Pro-Stereotype (and its subthemes Non-recognition of the stereotype, Perpetuation of stereotypes, Stereotype as something natural, and Danger of breaking stereotypes) and Counter-Stereotype (and its subthemes Recognition of the stereotype, Disagreement with the stereotype, and Combating the stereotype). The results highlight an ambiguity among participants regarding gender stereotypes. Furthermore, the impact of gender stereotypes in combating IPV should be considered, as well as the factors that sustain them.
